The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that four passengers lost their lives and several others sustained injuries following a train accident along the Warri–Itakpe rail line near Agbor in Delta State.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, involved the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS). Preliminary findings indicate that four coaches overturned while another one went off the tracks during the journey.According to the NRC, those who died include two adult women, one adult man, and an infant.

The confirmation was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, June 9, by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi.The corporation further disclosed that 442 passengers had boarded the train, along with 40 crew members, security operatives, and service providers, bringing the total number of people on board to 482.

Rescue operations were promptly activated with support from emergency agencies, including NEMA, FRSC, the Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, and local authorities. Authorities confirmed that 24 passengers sustained serious injuries, while others with varying degrees of injuries are receiving treatment in hospitals in Agbor.
