Nigeria made history on Saturday, October 24, 2026, recording a 1-0 victory over Rwanda in the first-ever international Waka Football match played on Nigerian soil at the Eagles Club, Surulere, Lagos.

The historic encounter, featuring the men’s over-60 teams of both countries, saw 64-year-old Adeola Adelanwa captain Nigeria to victory, with Godson Igwe scoring the decisive goal to secure a memorable start to the country’s international Waka Football journey.

After several attempts to break the deadlock were denied by the Rwandan goalkeeper, Nigeria finally found the breakthrough in the 17th minute when Adelanwa converted a free kick from the edge of the penalty area.

His well-taken effort proved to be the difference between the two sides, as Nigeria held on to their slender lead to claim a historic victory in front of the home crowd.

The match marked a significant milestone for the development of Waka Football in Nigeria, showcasing the sport’s potential to promote active participation, teamwork and competitive opportunities among older players.

Waka Football is a five-a-side variation of the game in which running is prohibited, with players required to walk throughout the match. The game is played over two 20-minute halves, placing emphasis on technique, teamwork, tactical awareness and ball control.

Speaking after the encounter, Nigeria’s captain, Adelanwa, expressed his delight at being part of the historic occasion, while acknowledging the collective effort that secured the victory.

“I am very happy and proud to be part of history, and particularly happier for Godson Igwe, who was lucky enough to be the one who scored the only goal,” he said.

“Even though we have to credit all my teammates, it is a team effort. Someone passed the ball to the person who passed it to me, so it was a collective effort and to the glory of our country.”

Nigeria’s hard-fought victory over Rwanda represents an important step in the growth of Waka Football in the country, providing a platform to expand the sport’s popularity and create more international opportunities for older football enthusiasts.

With the historic fixture now completed, Nigeria has laid down an early marker in its international Waka Football journey, celebrating not just a victory on the pitch but also the spirit of inclusion, teamwork and lifelong participation in sport.
