The Osun State Government has announced plans to resume strict enforcement of the Thursday environmental sanitation exercise to promote cleanliness and safeguard public health across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, disclosed this during a radio programme in Osogbo, where he called on residents to embrace proper sanitation practices and support the government’s efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

Adejoorin explained that the renewed enforcement would address indiscriminate waste disposal, blocked drainage channels and other environmental offences that contribute to flooding and environmental degradation.

He urged residents to keep their surroundings clean, dispose of refuse appropriately and ensure that drainage channels around their homes and business premises remain free of obstructions.

The commissioner stressed that environmental sanitation should not be regarded as the sole responsibility of the government, noting that individuals, communities, market associations, religious organisations and other stakeholders must work together to achieve a cleaner environment.

As part of efforts to ensure compliance, the Osun State Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation has intensified its sensitisation campaign, engaging traditional rulers, Iyalojas, Babalojas, Baales, religious leaders and other community stakeholders on the importance of proper waste management.

During the engagements, the taskforce warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on major roads and waterways, as well as other prohibited environmental practices, noting that offenders would face enforcement measures in accordance with the state’s environmental regulations.

The stakeholders were also encouraged to educate their members and residents on the need to maintain clean surroundings and comply with government directives on environmental sanitation.

The taskforce has extended its awareness campaign to radio programmes, using the media to educate the public on responsible waste disposal, the dangers of blocking waterways and the importance of preventing flooding through proper environmental practices.

The planned resumption of strict enforcement of the Thursday sanitation exercise is expected to complement these initiatives by encouraging residents to devote time to cleaning their surroundings and keeping public spaces free from refuse.

The state government reiterated the importance of collective responsibility in addressing environmental challenges, particularly indiscriminate waste disposal and activities that obstruct the free flow of water during rainfall.

Residents were therefore urged to cooperate with environmental officials and adhere to sanitation regulations to protect public health, minimise the risk of flooding and ensure a cleaner and safer environment across Osun State.
