The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Championship 2026 got underway on July 11 with impressive performances across centres, as teams made strong statements on the opening day.
Delta Babes FC began their campaign with a 2–1 victory over First Mahi Babes. Miracle Edafe opened the scoring late in the first half, while Nancy Kehinde doubled the lead early in the second half. Kehinde Okechukwu pulled one back for First Mahi Babes in the 69th minute, but Delta Babes held on for the win. In the other fixture, Rangers Women and Unification FC played out a goalless draw.
Wazbak Int’l Academy secured a 3–2 win over Fortress Ladies in a thrilling encounter. Wazbak took an early lead before Favour Enodumwen equalised from the penalty spot for Fortress Ladies. An own goal and a strike from Gift Nduka made it 2–2 before Abibat Adediran scored the winner for Wazbak. Meanwhile, DreamStar Ladies defeated Rosaria Victrix 3–1. Anuoluwapo Awotidoye scored twice, with Khadijah Kamarudeen also on target, while Egodi Okonkwo got a consolation goal for Rosaria Victrix.
Pelican Stars recorded a 2–1 win over Ikukuoma Queens, with goals from Amarachi Abel and Ewa Peace. Daniel Catherine scored for Ikukuoma Queens, but it was not enough to change the outcome. Ghetto Tigers also claimed a narrow 1–0 victory against Kwara Ladies, courtesy of a 54th-minute goal from Gift Udo Mama.
Moje Queens and Gallant Queens played out a 1–1 draw. Okafor Favour gave Gallant Queens the lead in the 31st minute before Adebanjo Kehinde equalised early in the second half. In the final fixture, Imo Strikers Queens dominated Chosen Generation Angels with a convincing 3–0 win. Anastasia Uzor opened the scoring in the 25th minute, while Mmesoma Amaechi netted twice to seal the victory.
Matchday one delivered excitement, goals, and strong performances, setting the tone for what promises to be a competitive NWFL Championship season.
