Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, have secured qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after a thrilling 5–3 victory over Benin Republic in Lomé, sealing an 8–5 aggregate win.
Following their 3–2 first-leg victory at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Nigeria the Flamingos traveled to Lomé with confidence and determination to finish the job as promised by the Coach and the entire team.
The match started at a high tempo, and Nigeria took an early lead in the 6th minute through Mary Akpan Dunstan. Benin Republic responded quickly, with Romaine Gandonou equalising five minutes later. The Flamingos regained control as Esther Enne Stephen restored their lead, before Queen Joseph extended the advantage in the 19th minute to give Nigeria a strong 3–1 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Nigeria increased their lead from the penalty spot in the 54th minute to make it 4–1. Benin Republic fought back, with Hermionne Lokossou reducing the deficit before Gandonou grabbed her second goal to make it 4–3.
With the game becoming more intense, Queen Joseph stepped up once again, scoring her second goal in the 76th minute to seal a 5–3 victory on the day.
The result confirms Nigeria’s place at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, as the Flamingos continue to show their strength and dominance as they join the Nigeria U20 National Women’s Team on the continental stage.
