Ogundinran Storms to 100m Crown as Enekwechi Extends Shot Put Dominance at Commonwealth Games Trials.

US-based sprinter Blessing Ogundinran emerged as Nigeria’s new women’s 100 metres champion after producing a brilliant performance to win the event at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games National Trials in Lagos.

Ogundinran crossed the finish line in 11.12 seconds to secure the national title, holding off the challenge of teenage sensation Miracle Ezechukwu, who ran a personal best of 11.15 seconds to finish second.

Olajide Olayinka claimed third place in 11.28 seconds.
Speaking after her victory, an emotional Ogundinran credited her coach’s advice and her determination to overcome a difficult journey from the United States.

“When I was at the start block, I was thinking of what my coach told me, that I should just execute my race and not panic, and that was what I did. It was a tough time getting here after travelling for almost four days due to what happened in the US, but I am grateful to God that I am going back with the title,” she said.

In the field events, Olympian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi once again underlined his status as Nigeria’s premier shot putter, winning the men’s title for a record fifth time with a throw of 21.46 metres. The achievement further strengthens his dominance of the event since he began representing Nigeria on the international stage.

Attention now shifts to Wednesday’s men’s 100 metres final, with some of the country’s fastest athletes advancing from the heats. Favour Ashe, Chidera Ezeakor, Fakorede Adekalu, Tejiri Godwin and Enoch Adegoke were among the standout performers who booked their places in the semifinals

The 400 metres semifinals also produced several impressive performances. In the women’s category, Patience Okon-George, IyanuOluwa Aderemi, Taiwo Kudoro, Faith Ezechukwu, Jecinter Lawrence and Becky Ebiyadi secured qualification for the final. Aderemi was particularly impressive, clocking a new personal best of 51.86 seconds.

On the men’s side, Emmanuel Ojeli, Sikiru Adeyemi, Victor Sampson, Samson Nathaniel, Victory Achakpoekri and Tyler Johnson progressed to the final.

The final day of the three-day championship promises more excitement as athletes battle for places on Team Nigeria for Glasgow 2026, with the men’s and women’s 200 metres and 400 metres finals, as well as the 100 metres hurdles and 110 metres hurdles, set to take centre stage.
