The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers and recovered a firearm following a violent robbery attack along the Oyo-Iwo Expressway in the Afijio Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects, identified as Abubakar Jape and Sheu Dengi, were paraded at the office of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) at the Command Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan.

According to the police, the suspects were apprehended after members of an armed robbery gang allegedly barricaded the Oyo-Iwo Expressway near Akoda Village at about 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, attacking motorists and passengers returning from a nearby market in Iwo.

Speaking with journalists during the parade, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said several victims sustained machete injuries during the attack, while others were dispossessed of cash, mobile phones and other valuables.

He added that the Command launched an operation immediately after receiving reports of the incident, leading to the arrest of the two suspects and the recovery of a firearm believed to have been used by the robbery gang.

Some of the victims who attended the parade identified the suspects as members of the gang that attacked them. They narrated how they were beaten with clubs, injured with machetes and robbed of their belongings.

The police spokesperson assured residents that efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang who escaped during the operation, while reaffirming the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Oyo State.
