The Osun State Police Command has arrested several suspects linked to political violence, armed attacks, and motorcycle theft in separate operations across the state.
Speaking at a press briefing held on Tuesday at the State Police Headquarters in Osogbo, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, said the arrests were part of the command’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security and tackle criminal activities across Osun State.
Represented by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the commissioner explained that police officers responded to a clash involving rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Osogbo on Monday. The unrest reportedly began after one faction accused another of preventing its members from accessing a motor park, leading to a disturbance that was quickly brought under control.
Later that day, at about 5:30 p.m., security operatives received a distress call reporting sporadic gunfire at the Oke-Ijetu area of Osogbo. Officers from the Anti-Robbery and Violent Crime Response Unit were immediately deployed to the scene.
According to the police, suspected hoodlums believed to be loyal to a faction allegedly led by one Wakili Alowonle opened fire on the responding officers, leaving three security personnel with gunshot injuries. The injured officers are currently receiving medical treatment.
One suspect, Adedeji Saheed Opeyemi (40), was arrested during the operation. Police said the suspect confessed that he was invited to the scene by an individual identified as Sibi, who allegedly handed him a pump-action gun on the instructions of Alowonle.
The police recovered six expended cartridges, four vehicles, four motorcycles, military camouflage, and suspected criminal charms from the operation. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other suspects still at large.
In a separate operation, detectives arrested two suspected political thugs, Alawode Ridwan (26) and Ajibade Ahmed (33), following reports that they were allegedly causing unrest around the Amadia area of Osogbo on July 16, 2026.
The command also announced the arrest of three suspects in connection with the theft of a Bajaj motorcycle stolen from a commercial motorcyclist at Osunjela, Osogbo, on July 19.
Acting on intelligence, police operatives tracked the stolen motorcycle to Modakeke, where it was recovered approximately two hours after the incident was reported.
The suspects were identified as Kamarudeen Babatunde (39), Lekan Usman (22), and Moses Oyebade (40) of Ondo Town, Ondo State, who was alleged to have received the stolen motorcycle.
The Commissioner of Police assured residents that all suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. He also urged members of the public to remain security conscious and continue providing timely and credible information to law enforcement agencies to support efforts aimed at combating crime across the state.
