Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, a former Director of Defence Information (DDI), has died while in captivity after being abducted by bandits in Katsina State.

Rabe was kidnapped about two weeks ago alongside his wife near the Matazu area of the state. The couple was reportedly travelling to attend a wedding ceremony when they were ambushed by armed terrorists.

Confirming the development, the Katsina State Government disclosed that the retired military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors.
The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, announced the tragic development in a statement issued on behalf of the state government.

“The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar,” the statement read.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy.
“The deceased retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension.”

The government described his death as a significant loss not only to his immediate family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria, given his years of dedicated service to the nation.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and the entire country, describing the incident as a dark moment and a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges confronting communities across the region.

According to the governor, the tragedy underscores the urgent need for a united and intensified effort against criminal elements threatening peace and stability

The Katsina State Government reiterated its commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice and strengthen ongoing efforts to combat banditry.

“Our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement added.

The government also offered prayers for the repose of the late general’s soul and comfort for his family during this difficult period.

Major General Rabe’s death has once again drawn attention to the security crisis in parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnapping and banditry continue to pose grave threats to lives and livelihoods.
