Edo Queens have added another remarkable record to their growing history after emerging as the 2026 WAFU B Women’s Champions, defeating Ampem Darkoa of Ghana in a dramatic final after previously losing to the same opponent during the group stage.
The journey for the Nigeria Women’s Football League champions in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, has been a true reflection of determination, resilience and dedication, qualities the team’s captain had highlighted ahead of the tournament.
Edo Queens began their campaign in commanding fashion, sealing a massive 7-0 victory over AS GNN of Niger before continuing their dominance with a convincing 3-1 win over ASEC Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire in their second group-stage game, a result that secured their qualification.
They suffered a setback in their final group-stage encounter, losing to Ampem Darkoa of Ghana, but the defeat only fuelled their determination to bounce back stronger.
The Nigerian champions responded emphatically in the semi-finals, recording an impressive 5-1 victory over Union Sportive des Forces Armées to book their place in the final — setting up another meeting with Ampem Darkoa.
The final began at a breathtaking pace, with Ampem Darkoa finding the opening goal just seconds into the encounter.
However, Edo Queens wasted no time in responding, with Dooshima Tarnum restoring parity just two minutes later. Neither side could find another breakthrough before the break as the first half ended 1-1.
Ampem Darkoa regained the lead after the restart through a converted penalty, putting Edo Queens under pressure once again.
But the Nigerian champions refused to surrender.
With the game heading towards its final moments, Oluebube Umuejiaku produced the crucial equaliser to bring Edo Queens back into the contest and force the final into a 2-2 draw at full time.
The championship was ultimately decided through a penalty shootout, where Edo Queens displayed remarkable composure to complete their comeback with a commanding 4-1 victory.
From a group-stage defeat to a championship winning triumph against the same opponent, Edo Queens have written another memorable chapter in their history.
The NWFL Champions are now WAFU B champions, lifting their second major trophy as they turn their attention to the next challenge — the CAF Women’s Champions League.
