At least two persons were feared dead while several others sustained injuries following a violent clash between suspected rival cult groups in the Idi-Seke area of Osogbo, the Osun State capital, in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident, which sparked panic across the neighbourhood, forced residents and business owners to flee for safety as sporadic gunshots and violent attacks disrupted the usually peaceful community. Eyewitnesses said the confrontation escalated rapidly as members of the rival groups engaged one another in a fierce battle, leaving casualties in its wake.
According to residents, several vehicles parked within the area were vandalised during the violence, while some of the injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Commercial activities were temporarily brought to a standstill as many residents remained indoors to avoid being caught in the crossfire.
Security operatives were later deployed to the area to restore normalcy and prevent further violence. Their presence helped to calm the situation, although tension reportedly lingered among residents.
As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident or confirm the number of casualties. Meanwhile, residents have appealed to the Osun State Government and security agencies to strengthen efforts to curb cult-related violence and ensure the safety of lives and property in the state.
