Bayelsa Queens dominated large spells of the encounter from kickoff and believed they had taken the lead in the 20th minute when Sofiat Idris found the back of the net, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
Despite controlling possession and creating the better chances, the Prosperity Girls were unable to extend their advantage, while Ibom Angels capitalised on a momentary lapse in concentration in the second half to draw level and force the contest into penalties.
Speaking after the game, Ogbonda praised his players for their display despite the disappointing result.
“We started the game well and scored in the first half. In the second half, we lost a little bit of concentration that made our opponent equalise. However, we showed class, but football can be cruel and that was what happened today,” he said.
The Bayelsa Queens coach admitted his side was unfortunate to crash out at the Round of 16 stage but insisted the team would quickly regroup and channel its focus toward the Super Six campaign.
