A former Louisiana State University (LSU) track athlete, Godson Oghenebrume, has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison after being convicted of possessing a firearm while residing in the United States on a non-immigrant student visa.
Oghenebrume, 23, a Nigerian national living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was sentenced by U.S.
Chief Judge Shelly Dick. The sentence was announced on Tuesday by U.S. Attorney Kurt Wall.
In addition to the prison term, Oghenebrume is expected to face removal or deportation proceedings upon completing his sentence.
According to court records and admissions made during his guilty plea, Oghenebrume illegally possessed a Glock 43X 9mm pistol on February 7, 2025, while in the United States under an F-1 student visa.
Investigators said the incident began when Oghenebrume’s ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of his infant child, arrived at his apartment that evening with the baby.
Oghenebrume had reportedly been inside the apartment with another woman.
An argument broke out between the former couple outside the apartment, during which Oghenebrume allegedly fired a gunshot while the child was present.
Authorities said he later returned to the apartment, but tensions escalated after his ex-girlfriend entered and saw him with the other woman. The confrontation spilled outside, where Oghenebrume allegedly fired several more shots as the woman fled the scene.
Investigators discovered multiple bullet impacts in the walls of the apartment complex.
Court documents further revealed that Oghenebrume smashed his ex-girlfriend’s phone and took custody of the infant, who had remained present throughout the incident.
The woman later sought assistance from the other woman in the apartment, who helped retrieve the child from Oghenebrume.
When deputies from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene, Oghenebrume allegedly ignored commands from officers, walked away, and discarded the Glock pistol into nearby shrubs before he was eventually detained.
Neighbours told investigators they heard gunshots during the incident, with one resident saying the sound left his ears ringing.
During a post-Miranda interview with detectives, Oghenebrume admitted firing the weapon, claiming he only intended to frighten his ex-girlfriend and force her to leave.
The former LSU athlete later pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by an alien admitted to the United States under a non-immigrant visa.
