The Lagos State Government has appealed for calm and understanding from residents following the widespread flash flooding recorded across several parts of the state in recent weeks.

In response to the situation, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the immediate dredging and maintenance of 28 additional primary drainage channels as part of efforts to improve water flow and reduce flooding across the state.

Speaking on the development, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the flooding was triggered by an extreme weather event that brought an unusually high volume of rainfall within a short period.

According to him, the intensity of the downpour overwhelmed existing drainage infrastructure in some locations, leading to temporary flooding in parts of Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikeja, Gbagada, Mushin, Mafoluku and several other communities.

Wahab noted that the phenomenon was not unique to Lagos, revealing that similar heavy rainfall events and flooding were recorded in several African countries and parts of North America during the same period.

He explained that Lagos faces unique environmental and hydrological challenges due to its extensive network of lagoons, rivers, creeks and tidal water bodies, coupled with significantly higher rainfall intensity compared to many other cities.

The commissioner added that the interaction between the Atlantic Ocean, the Lagos Lagoon and numerous rivers and creeks, particularly during periods of high tide, naturally slows the discharge of stormwater into the sea, resulting in temporary flooding in some low-lying areas during periods of exceptionally heavy rainfall.

Despite the challenges, Wahab assured residents that the state government remains fully on top of the situation through continuous monitoring of drainage infrastructure, flood-prone communities and critical water channels across the state.

He disclosed that emergency response agencies have been deployed to affected areas to support residents and ensure floodwaters recede as quickly as weather conditions permit.

The commissioner further stressed that while the government continues to invest heavily in drainage construction, channelisation, desilting and other flood control measures, residents also have an important role to play by keeping drainage channels free from waste and complying with environmental regulations.

The NATIONS DIGEST reports that the latest intervention by the Lagos State Government is aimed at strengthening flood management efforts and mitigating the impact of future heavy rainfall across the state.
