The Osun State Police Command has formally apologised to the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, Mr. Olalekan Akindoju, over his unlawful detention by police operatives on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

The apology was conveyed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, on behalf of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan.

According to the statement, the Police Command expressed regret over the incident and extended its apology not only to Akindoju but also to the leadership and members of the Osun State Council of the NUJ, management and staff of Rave 91.7FM/WSTV, and the entire journalism community in the state.

The Command acknowledged the concerns generated by the detention and assured media practitioners of its commitment to maintaining a cordial and professional relationship with journalists in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.

DSP Ojelabi stated that the apology reflected the position of the Commissioner of Police, who values the role of the media as critical partners in promoting public safety, accountability, and democratic governance.
The Police Command further reaffirmed its respect for press freedom and pledged to strengthen collaboration with journalists and media organisations across Osun State to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The unlawful detention of Akindoju had attracted widespread condemnation from media stakeholders and professional bodies, who called for accountability and respect for the rights of journalists in the course of their duties.
