The Federal Government has announced plans to deploy 10,000 electric tricycles across Nigeria beginning in August 2026 as part of efforts to improve public transportation, create jobs, and promote environmentally friendly mobility solutions.
The initiative, which will be spearheaded by the North East Development Commission (NEDC), is expected to commence in the North-East region before being extended to other parts of the country through the nation’s regional development commissions.
Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a courtesy visit by members of the Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 group. He explained that the programme aligns with the administration’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s transportation sector while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
According to the Vice President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the electric mobility initiative beyond the North-East, ensuring that other regions of the country also benefit from the programme.
He noted that the deployment of the electric tricycles would not only provide affordable and efficient transportation services but also contribute to cleaner air and reduced carbon emissions.
Shettima further stated that the project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for operators, technicians, maintenance personnel, and other stakeholders within the transport value chain.
The Federal Government believes the introduction of electric-powered tricycles will help address transportation challenges in many communities, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas, while supporting the country’s transition towards renewable energy and sustainable development.
The government’s is to enhance efforts Nigeria’s transport infrastructure, improve mobility for citizens, and encourage the adoption of green technology as part of its economic and environmental agenda.
