National Intermediate Games Postponed to First Quarter of 2027

The maiden edition of the National Intermediate Games, earlier scheduled to take place in Lagos from October 1 to 15, 2026, has been postponed to the first quarter of 2027.

The decision was taken to allow for further preparations and ensure the successful hosting of a world-class inaugural edition of the Games.

According to a press statement signed by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media in the Office of the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Lagos State Sports Commission formally communicated the decision to the NSC following a comprehensive review of preparations.

The review involved the Local Organising Committee (LOC), the National Sports Commission and an independent Quality Control and Assurance Specialist after the Joint Technical Meeting held between September 3 and 6, 2026.

The assessment examined proposed facilities, sporting events, technical requirements, rules and regulations, as well as other critical operational areas.

Although the review established that the Games could technically proceed as scheduled, it was concluded that the remaining timeframe might not be sufficient to deliver the maiden edition at a standard befitting Lagos and an event of national importance.
The postponement, according to the statement, is aimed at protecting the quality, credibility and long-term success of the National Intermediate Games, which is expected to set an operational benchmark for future editions.

Lagos State has reaffirmed its commitment to hosting the Games and will continue preparations in collaboration with the National Sports Commission and other stakeholders while a new date is being finalised by the Local Organising Committee.

Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission will continue with activities already planned for the Games, including accreditation, zonal elimination for team sports, and other technical and operational programmes within its immediate responsibility.

The National Intermediate Games will be the first edition of the competition when it eventually takes place in 2027.
