Osun Guber: Accord Alleges Plot to Steal Sensitive Election Materials, Alerts INEC

The Osun State chapter of the Accord Party has alleged that it received credible intelligence indicating that some opposition elements are planning to compromise the August 15 governorship election by stealing and concealing sensitive election materials meant for designated polling units across the state.

In a statement signed by the Osun State Chairman of the party, Pastor Victor Babalola Akande, on Thursday, the party claimed the alleged plot was aimed at preventing the timely distribution of election materials to targeted polling units, thereby disenfranchising eligible voters and undermining the credibility of the election.

The party called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure adequate security for the movement, storage and distribution of all sensitive election materials, warning that any negligence or complicity that results in the diversion or theft of election materials would amount to a betrayal of the commission’s constitutional responsibility.
Accord urged INEC to strengthen accountability throughout the logistics process to prevent any attempt to tamper with materials meant for polling units across the state.

The party also appealed to security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other relevant agencies, to investigate the alleged intelligence and take proactive measures to prevent any disruption of the electoral process.

According to the statement, any attempt by individuals or groups to steal, divert or deliberately conceal election materials with the aim of disenfranchising voters or manipulating the outcome of the election would be resisted through lawful and democratic means.

The party further appealed to residents of Osun State to remain peaceful, vigilant and law-abiding, while encouraging them to promptly report any suspicious movement or handling of election materials to the appropriate authorities.
Describing the August 15 governorship election as a crucial moment for democracy in the state, Accord urged all stakeholders to ensure that the exercise remains free, fair and credible.
