The Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into allegations of misconduct involving some recently passed-out personnel of the military institution.
In a follow-up statement issued on Friday by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Major Ibrahim Yahaya, the Army said the Board of Inquiry set up to investigate the allegations was still carrying out its assignment and would leave no stone unturned in uncovering the facts surrounding the incident.
The command stressed that the Nigerian Army remained a disciplined and professional institution that does not tolerate indiscipline or misconduct, assuring that any personnel found culpable would be sanctioned in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable laws.
The statement also addressed rape allegations that have recently gained traction on social media and were reportedly linked to comments attributed to the Vice Chancellor of Osun State University.
According to the Army, it has yet to receive any formal complaint, medical report, petition or credible evidence from alleged victims, witnesses or the university management to substantiate claims of rape involving any of its personnel.
“At this time, Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo has not received any formal complaint, medical report, or credible evidence from any alleged victim, witness, or the university management to substantiate the claim of rape by our personnel,” the statement said.
The command described the widespread circulation of the allegations as unconfirmed and potentially misleading in the absence of verifiable evidence, urging stakeholders to avoid actions or statements capable of prejudicing the ongoing investigation or escalating tensions.
The Army appealed to any alleged victims of assault or sexual misconduct, eyewitnesses and individuals with videos, photographs, medical records or other relevant evidence to come forward and present such information confidentially to the Board of Inquiry at the Depot or through the Army Public Relations Office.
It assured prospective witnesses and complainants that their identities and safety would be protected in line with military regulations and legal procedures.
The Army further called on the media, the National Association of Nigerian Students, the management of Osun State University and members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, warning that misinformation and sensational reporting could undermine efforts to establish the truth and create unnecessary panic among students and host communities.
Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo reiterated its commitment to civil-military cooperation, the protection of students and citizens, and the promotion of human rights, adding that the public would be updated as the investigation progresses.
