The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun, has said that the growing autonomy of local governments is enabling councils to make meaningful contributions to the security and development of their communities.
Speaking on Saturday during the distribution of the remaining security patrol vehicles to security agencies across Osun State, Hon. Abiodun described the initiative as a demonstration of the commitment of the 30 local government councils and the Area Office to safeguarding lives and property.
He noted that the distribution fulfilled a promise earlier made by the councils to strengthen security operations across the state.
“This is not just about handing over vehicles. It is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the safety, security and well-being of our people. Today is indeed a case of ‘a promise made, a promise kept,'” he said.
The ALGON Chairman stressed that security remains the foundation of sustainable development, adding that no society can prosper without peace and stability.
He reaffirmed that local governments, being the closest tier of government to the grassroots, understand the peculiar security challenges within their communities and are better positioned to respond effectively.
Hon. Abiodun commended the police and other security agencies for maintaining peace across Osun State, while recalling the killing of former local government chairman, Hon. Remi Abass, in February 2025 following the Court of Appeal judgment that reinstated elected council officials.
According to him, the tragic incident serves as a reminder that the security of lives and property must remain a top priority, particularly as the state prepares for future elections, including the forthcoming governorship poll.
The ALGON Chairman described the patrol vehicle initiative as one of the practical benefits of local government autonomy, noting that financial and administrative independence has empowered councils to initiate projects that directly address the needs of the people.
“Autonomy enables us to respond without undue delay, design solutions tailored to our local realities, and take responsibility for the security and welfare of our communities. This distribution of patrol vehicles is a practical demonstration of what local government autonomy can achieve,” he stated.
He expressed confidence that the vehicles would improve the mobility and response capacity of security agencies in combating crime and maintaining law and order.
Hon. Abiodun also commended security personnel for their dedication, courage and sacrifices in protecting lives and property, describing the vehicles as a token of appreciation and support for their invaluable service.
He, however, emphasized that security remains a collective responsibility, urging residents of Osun State to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
The ALGON Chairman further charged the beneficiary agencies to deploy the vehicles responsibly and ensure proper maintenance so they can effectively serve the purpose for which they were provided.
He concluded by appreciating all stakeholders, particularly the Federal Government of Nigeria, for supporting the initiative aimed at strengthening security across Osun State.
