The Federal Government has called for stronger collaboration among citizens, the media, civil society organisations, and security agencies in a renewed effort to combat terrorism and violent extremism threatening national security. The appeal was made during a National Press Briefing held in Abuja on Thursday, where officials emphasized unity and collective responsibility in addressing insecurity across the country.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said defeating terrorism requires a national response that transcends political, ethnic, and religious divisions. He stated that the campaign under the theme #UniteAgainstTerror reflects the government’s belief that “an attack against one Nigerian is an attack against all Nigerians,” stressing that terrorism has no affiliation or identity beyond destruction.
Reaffirming government commitment, Idris said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains fully dedicated to ensuring the safe rescue of schoolchildren and teachers recently abducted in Oyo and Borno States. He assured Nigerians that intelligence-driven operations and coordinated rescue missions have been intensified to secure the victims’ release and bring perpetrators to justice.
He further highlighted ongoing military successes, noting that troops under Operation Hadin Kai and other security formations across the North-West, North-Central, South-East, and South-South have recorded gains, including the neutralisation of terrorists, dismantling of kidnapping networks, and destruction of criminal hideouts.
The Minister also referenced judicial progress, including convictions linked to the June 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, and disclosed that hundreds of terrorism suspects are currently facing trial nationwide. He urged the media to report responsibly to avoid amplifying terrorist propaganda while encouraging Nigerians to provide credible intelligence to security agencies.
The briefing was attended by top government and security officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Binyerem C. Ukaire; the Inspector General of Police, represented by Force PRO DCP Anthony Okon Placid; and presidential aides such as Sunday Dare, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, Fredrick Nwabufo, and Tunde Rahman, among others, who all reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring peace and security nationwide.
