A fresh political controversy has erupted within the Osun progressive camp after former Chief Press Secretary to ex-governor Gboyega Oyetola, Ismail Omipidan, described former deputy governor Iyiola Omisore as “an outcast within the progressive family.” Omipidan made the remarks during an appearance on Western Spring Television while responding to comments allegedly made by former Osun Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Yemi Lawal a known loyalist of Omisore.

During the interview, Omipidan claimed that Omisore’s return to political relevance in Osun was largely due to the intervention and support of Oyetola. According to him, the former governor played a key role in reviving Omisore’s political career at a time many political actors had distanced themselves from the former deputy governor. He argued that despite the support and accommodation Omisore received within the progressive fold, he has continued to face resistance and distrust from several stakeholders in the camp.

Omipidan also dismissed attempts by Yemi Lawal to defend Omisore’s standing within the All Progressives Congress, insisting that many loyalists of the party still do not regard the former deputy governor as a core progressive politician. He maintained that Omisore’s political history and past alignments continue to generate debate among party members and political observers across Osun State.

The controversy reportedly began after Yemi Lawal publicly defended Omisore and challenged narratives suggesting the former deputy governor lacks influence within the progressive movement. Azeez was said to have criticised some loyalists of Oyetola for allegedly trying to undermine Omisore’s contributions to the party and the political development of the state. His comments triggered reactions from supporters on both sides, further exposing lingering divisions within the APC in Osun.

The  public disagreement may further deepen cracks within the progressive family in Osun if not carefully managed. While supporters of Omipidan insist he merely stated political realities, loyalists of Omisore have described the remarks as unnecessary and provocative, setting the stage for another round of political confrontations within the state’s ruling opposition circle.
