The Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju, has been released by the police following his arrest on Wednesday night in what sources described as a case of mistaken identity.

Akindoju’s arrest had triggered concern within media circles after reports emerged that police operatives allegedly picked him up from his residence and took him into custody..

Providing an update on the incident, sources said efforts by the Chairman of Osun NUJ, Comrade Yemi Aboderin, journalists and concerned stakeholders led to the discovery of his whereabouts at the Police Public Relations Unit (PRU) detention facility at the Osun State Police Headquarters in Osogbo. The Nations Digest reports.

“It was probably a case of mistaken identity,” a source familiar with the matter disclosed, adding that immediate steps were taken to secure his release.

The NUJ official was subsequently freed, bringing relief to colleagues, friends and members of the journalism community who had expressed worries over his detention.

While details surrounding the circumstances of the arrest remain sketchy, the incident has raised questions about the process that led to the detention of the union official.

Journalists and media stakeholders have welcomed his release and are expected to seek further clarification from the police regarding the events that culminated in the arrest.
