Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has called for increased recruitment, training, and improved welfare for security personnel as part of efforts to tackle Nigeria’s growing security challenges.Buratai made the remarks during an interview on Beyond The Headlines while reacting to the recent abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo State and the broader issue of insecurity across the country.

He was asked why bandits and other criminal groups often appear to operate openly, recording videos, showing their faces, making phone calls, and sometimes livestreaming their activities without being apprehended.Responding to the question, the retired army chief dismissed suggestions that security agencies were unable to trace the criminals.

According to him, if security operatives can successfully track ordinary citizens and social media influencers, they also possess the capability to locate bandits and other criminal elements.“I don’t think security operatives failed to locate bandits. If they can locate ordinary citizens or social media influencers, I don’t believe they cannot locate these bandits,” Buratai said during the interview. He, however, stressed the need for greater capacity building across all security agencies, noting that more police officers and military personnel should be recruited, properly trained, and adequately motivated.

He added that improving the welfare of security operatives remains crucial to strengthening the country’s fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats.
