Jude Imagwe, a former Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has dismissed claims linking the former Nigerian leader to a 2027 presidential bid under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Imagwe was reacting to reports that a faction of the PDP led by Taminu Turaki had adopted Jonathan as its presidential candidate ahead of the next general election.
Speaking on the development, the former presidential aide insisted that Jonathan is neither desperate for power nor interested in returning to Aso Rock.
“One thing is clear: former President Jonathan is not power-hungry or power-drunk,” Imagwe said.
“If Jonathan was desperate for power, he would not have peacefully relinquished power in 2015. I also do not think he is desperate to return to Aso Rock because clearly, he has not forgotten anything there.”
He stressed that there is no evidence showing that Jonathan accepted, completed, or submitted any nomination forms for the 2027 election.
“What is clear is that nobody obtains a nomination form without signing it. Such processes are ceremonial and usually public.
“There are no pictorial or documented evidences suggesting that any nomination documents were completed by the former president,” he added.
Imagwe further accused some political actors of dragging Jonathan’s name into 2027 discussions for personal relevance and political attention.
“It is unfortunate that certain individuals, driven by dangerous ambitions to remain relevant in public discourse ahead of 2027, have chosen to drag the name of an innocent gentleman who has not publicly declared any intention to run,” he said.
He concluded by describing Jonathan’s rise to leadership as a product of sacrifice, discipline, resilience, humility, and commitment to national service.
