Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed confidence that the Igbo community in the state, many of whom supported Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 election, will back President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, Oborevwori said the political dynamics that shaped the 2023 election in Delta State have changed, insisting that the situation would not repeat itself in the next general election.
Peter Obi won Delta State in the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party platform, largely driven by support from non-indigenes and sentiments surrounding the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC.
However, the governor claimed that the Igbo community in Delta is now working closely with his administration and would support President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“The Igbo community in Delta State that voted for Peter Obi in 2023 are now on the same page with us. I told them to vote for the party and not just the candidate,” Oborevwori said.
“The love they have for me gives me confidence that they will vote for Tinubu. The two major factors that influenced the 2023 election in Delta were religion and non-indigene sentiments, but we have been able to manage and
unite everyone.”
The governor also stated that religious leaders who previously opposed the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket are now supportive of the ruling party.
“Before I moved to the APC, we informed our religious leaders so they could pray for us. You cannot pray for someone and at the same time curse the person,” he added.
