The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Rilwan Olatunji Disu, has deployed Commissioner of Police (CP) Election, Samuel Etaifo Erale, to Osun State to oversee the security architecture for the forthcoming governorship election.
The deployment, announced in a statement on Friday by the Osun State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said the move reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, peaceful and credible electoral process across the state.
According to the statement, CP Erale will coordinate election security operations in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with the Electoral Act, the Code of Conduct for Security Personnel on Electoral Duty and other extant laws guiding the election. The police said the deployment is aimed at guaranteeing the safety of voters, electoral officials, election observers, media practitioners and all law-abiding residents before, during and after the poll.
The Command also assured residents that adequate security measures have been put in place to protect lives, property and sensitive electoral materials throughout the election period. It added that all officers deployed for election duties have been directed to remain impartial, professional and respectful of the rights of every citizen, regardless of political affiliation.
The police further warned political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders against engaging in electoral violence, vote buying, voter intimidation, the spread of misinformation or any other act capable of disrupting public order. It urged residents to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security agencies and promptly report any suspicious activities through the Command’s emergency channels.
Reaffirming its commitment to a peaceful election, the Nigeria Police Force said it would provide a level playing field for all political parties and ensure that the will of the people is expressed through a credible, transparent and violence-free governorship election.
