The University of Ilesa has dismissed reports alleging that it failed to refund tuition fees to students who paid before benefiting from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing the claims as false, misleading, and inconsistent with the facts.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Senior Assistant Registrar, Corporate Services and Information Unit, Babatunde Fanawopo, the university maintained that it has consistently processed refunds for eligible students in line with NELFUND operational guidelines and extant financial regulations.
The institution stressed that it has never refused to refund qualified beneficiaries and remains fully committed to supporting the successful implementation of the Federal Government’s student loan programme.
According to the university, a total of 3,993 students benefited from the 2026 NELFUND disbursement.
The figure comprises 1,254 students in the first batch and 2,739 students in the second batch. It added that 2,734 students successfully accessed their loans through the Wallet funding system, describing it as evidence of the effectiveness of its implementation process.
Providing an update on tuition refunds, the management disclosed that 168 students in the first batch and 106 students in the second batch have already received refunds. In addition, refunds for 122 more students have been processed, bringing the total number of refunded beneficiaries to 396.
The university further revealed that 133 additional refund requests are currently undergoing processing, while some beneficiaries are yet to complete the required verification procedures or make decisions regarding their loan offers.
It explained that the processing of outstanding refunds depends on the completion of verification exercises, confirmation of bank account details, and other administrative requirements aimed at ensuring transparency, accuracy, and accountability.
The management advised students seeking clarification or assistance to visit the NELFUND Desk Office at the University Bursary Department, where officials are available to assist with verification, confirmation of banking details, and the resolution of outstanding issues to facilitate prompt refunds.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and due process, the University of Ilesa stated that it will not engage in any action capable of undermining, frustrating, or discrediting the implementation of the NELFUND scheme.
