Nigerian striker Joy Ogochukwu Omewa has completed a move to Swedish women’s football powerhouse BK Häcken, ending her brief spell at Nottingham Forest and committing her future to the Damallsvenskan champions until 2029.
The transfer comes at a pivotal stage in the 23-year-old’s career as she prepares to make her Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) debut with the Super Falcons.
Announcing the signing, BK Häcken described Omewa as an exciting addition to their squad, citing her impressive scoring record and attacking qualities as key reasons behind the move.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, the Nigerian forward expressed delight at joining the Swedish club.
“I’ve heard great things about BK Häcken and the way the club develops players. I’m excited to be here and can’t wait to get started,” she said.
Football director Martin Ericsson believes Omewa’s natural eye for goal makes her an ideal fit for the club’s ambitions.
“Joy has shown throughout her career that she knows how to find the back of the net. She has excellent movement, a strong attacking mindset and the qualities we were looking for,” Ericsson noted.
Omewa’s journey to one of Sweden’s top clubs has been built on consistent progress. She first made a name for herself in the Nigeria Women’s Football League with Osun Babes before enjoying another productive spell at Confluence Queens.
Her performances earned her a move to Danish club B.93 in 2021, where she adjusted quickly to European football before taking another step forward with Fortuna Hjørring.
It was in Denmark that the Nigerian forward truly flourished. She finished the 2024–25 campaign with 22 league goals, helping Fortuna Hjørring secure both the league championship and the Danish Cup. Her outstanding season was rewarded with the league’s Player of the Season award.
Those achievements opened the door to English football, with Nottingham Forest signing her in January 2026. Although she spent only six months with the club, Omewa made an immediate impression by scoring three goals in nine league appearances.
Now, the prolific striker begins another chapter in Sweden, where she will compete in both domestic and European competitions while sharing the dressing room with fellow Super Falcons midfielder Halimatu Ayinde.
The move also comes just days before Omewa is expected to make her first appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, providing her with another opportunity to showcase her talent on one of the biggest stages in African football.
As she settles into life at BK Häcken, expectations will be high for a player whose steady rise through Nigeria, Denmark, England and now Sweden has established her as one of the country’s most promising attacking talents.
A long-term contract now secured and a major international tournament ahead, Omewa will be hoping this latest move serves as the launchpad for even greater success at both club and international level.
