It was a gritty win against one of the continent’s heavyweights, and it gives Nigeria a much-needed lift in Group C as they push for a World Cup ticket.
From tip-off, it was a real back-and-forth battle. Nigeria took the first quarter 23-21, but Tunisia hit back to take a one point advantage at halftime. D’Tigers came out sharper after the break, controlling the third quarter with a disciplined performance, then dug deep to fend off a late Tunisian surge and hold on by three points.
Josh Okogie was the standout for Nigeria. He finished with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals, making his presence felt on both ends. Ike Iroegbu added 16 points and 5 assists, Talib Zanna bossed the paint with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Caleb Agada chipped in 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in another complete showing.
Tunisia refused to go away, with Omar Abada and Oussama Marnaoui keeping them in it right to the end. But Nigeria’s defense stepped up when it mattered most. D’Tigers got key stops and finished possessions calmly in the last minute, shutting the door on any chance of overtime.
The result puts Nigeria in a solid spot in the qualifiers, but the job isn’t done yet. D’Tigers still have two games left in this window, against Guinea and Rwanda. Win both and they’ll be in a very strong position to move into the next round.
With momentum on their side now, the message is clear. Beating Tunisia proves D’Tigers can match Africa’s best, but they’ll need the same energy and focus against Guinea and Rwanda. Do that, and Nigeria will be one step closer to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
