Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has officially announced his retirement from active football, bringing an end to a career that spanned nearly two decades.

Akpeyi confirmed his decision during an event in South Africa, revealing that he has already begun preparations for the next phase of his career. The 39-year-old stated that he has enrolled in coaching courses and is now awaiting an opportunity to start working as a coach.

“I’ve retired from active football. I have started my coaching courses and am simply waiting for an opportunity to begin working,” Akpeyi said.

The veteran shot-stopper enjoyed a distinguished career for both club and country, representing Nigeria at major international tournaments. He was part of the Nigerian squad that finished as runners-up at the FIFA U-20 World Cup and won a bronze medal in football at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016. He also helped the Super Eagles secure a third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Among his notable achievements are back-to-back victories in Nigeria’s Federation Cup in 2011 and 2012. Akpeyi leaves the game as one of Nigeria’s most experienced goalkeepers, with many fans expected to remember his contributions to the national team and the clubs he represented throughout his career.
